How SEO and Google Ads differ
Google Ads puts you at the top of the page right away, as long as you keep paying. Stop paying and you disappear. SEO takes months to build, but once you rank, the clicks and calls keep coming without a cost per click.
Ads are like renting. SEO is like owning. Most businesses do best with a mix, at least for a while.
Ads versus SEO
When to run both
Running both makes sense in a few common cases.
- You are new, or your site is new, and you need leads before SEO kicks in.
- You are in a competitive field, like law, home services, or medical, where the top of the page is crowded.
- You want to test which services and areas bring the best leads before you invest in pages for them.
- You have a busy season and want extra reach while it lasts.
For many trades, Local Services Ads are worth a look too. They show above regular ads, you pay per lead instead of per click, and your reviews show right in the ad.
When one is enough
If your budget is small, splitting it can mean doing both badly. A business with a few hundred dollars a month usually gets more from SEO and a strong Google profile than from a thin ad budget that runs out by noon.
On the other hand, if you only need leads for a short window, like an event or a seasonal rush, ads alone may be the better fit.
Stop paying twice for the same click
Once your SEO starts working, check where you are paying for clicks you would get anyway. If you rank first in the map pack and organic results for a search, you may not need to bid heavily on it.
Look at your search terms report every month. Add negative keywords for searches that do not fit, like jobs, free, or do it yourself. Those small changes often save more money than any bid strategy.
Let each one help the other
Ads give you fast data. Within weeks you can see which searches lead to calls and which waste money. Use that to decide which service and area pages to build first for SEO.
SEO gives you better landing pages. A clear, fast service page usually converts ad clicks better than a homepage, which lowers your cost per lead.
A simple plan for a Nashville business
Start SEO and a modest ad budget at the same time. Point ads at your most profitable services and areas. Each month, look at which searches you now win organically and lower your bids on them. Move the savings into searches you do not rank for yet.
Over a year, ads should shrink to the searches SEO cannot reach, while SEO carries more of the load. Our local SEO and pricing pages show what the SEO side costs.
